Community Engagement Through Art Therapy at the James Museum (2023-2024)

During my time at the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in St. Petersburg, FL, I have had the honor of working closely with their Art in Mind program. This unique initiative was developed in collaboration with the University of South Florida’s Judy Genshaft Honors College. Specially trained museum docents and undergraduate students facilitate an hour-long tour designed to promote expression, connection, and an overall positive experience through the exploration of art. Committed to addressing the escalating demand for dementia-related programs in Pinellas County and beyond, Art in Mind partners with local organizations and assisted living facilities to serve both adults with dementia and their caregivers. Through the generosity provided by our donors, this program is offered for free to those who most benefit.

As a docent and intern, I’ve facilitated various interactive sessions that encourage individuals to connect with the museum’s rich collections while exploring their own creative processes. By combining art therapy techniques with the museum environment, the program fosters a space where visitors can experience art as a therapeutic tool.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work has been expanding the reach of targeted museum programming to diverse community groups, helping to make art and mental wellness accessible to a wider audience. The connection between art and mental health is deeply powerful, and I am passionate about continuing to explore how museums and other community spaces can serve as havens for healing and self-discovery. This Fall, I am offering two Mindful Art Adventures that anyone can sign up to attend.

Whether guided tours focused on mindfulness, facilitating workshops, or assisting with the museum’s broader mission, my work at the James Museum has shaped my path toward becoming an art therapist. It has reinforced my belief in the transformative power of art and its potential to revolutionize mental health care in both individual and community settings.

Proud to Announce: Graduation from the University of South Florida in Spring of 2024

I am excited to share that I graduated cum laude from the University of South Florida in the Spring (2024), earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a concentration in Diversity and a minor in Studio Art. This accomplishment reflects years of dedication to understanding the intricate relationship between psychology, art, and diversity.

My academic journey allowed me to explore the psychological aspects of human behavior while focusing on how diversity shapes our experiences. The combination of psychology and studio art has deepened my understanding of the therapeutic power of art, which has been instrumental in shaping my passion for art therapy and mental health care.

As a first-generation college student, I find this achievement to be of particular significance. It represents years of dedication, resilience, and a deep passion for understanding the intersections of psychology, art, and diversity.

I’m grateful for the support of my professors, peers, and mentors, and I look forward to continuing my education and professional development in clinical mental health counseling and art therapy. This achievement is just the beginning of a lifelong commitment to serving individuals and communities through creative and holistic approaches to mental health.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to my incredible mother, Suzanne Tearno, and my brother, Frank Tearno, for their unwavering support throughout this journey. I could not have reached this milestone without their love and encouragement.

I also want to express my deepest gratitude to my supportive partner, Alex Winner, and his wonderful parents, Jackie and Harold Winner. Their belief in me and constant support have strengthened and motivated me. I am endlessly grateful for their love as I pursue my passions.

This degree is not just a personal achievement but a reflection of the community of family and loved ones who have stood by me every step of the way. I look forward to carrying this accomplishment forward as I continue my Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy education.

Exciting News: Beginning My Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with an Art Therapy Concentration

I am thrilled to share that this Fall (2024), I have officially begun my master’s program at Antioch University. I am pursuing a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Art Therapy. This milestone marks the next step in my journey to becoming a licensed mental health counselor and certified art therapist.

With a focus on trauma-informed care and a commitment to integrating art therapy into community spaces, I am eager to deepen my knowledge and refine my skills to better serve diverse populations. This program will provide me with the academic foundation and clinical training necessary to continue exploring the powerful intersection of art, mental health, and healing.

I am especially excited to bring this expanded expertise to my ongoing work at the James Museum and to further develop new ways of blending art therapy practices with museum and community arts programming. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way—I look forward to sharing this journey with you!
